Pavers are a base-preparation job with a decorative surface on top. The pattern is what you notice; the excavation and compaction underneath is what determines whether the surface is still flat in ten years.
What we install
Driveways and aprons, front walkways and entries, rear patios and seating areas, and pool surrounds. Pavers suit Florida well: they handle heat without softening the way asphalt can, individual units can be lifted and reset if something settles or a utility needs access, and the joints let water through rather than sheeting it toward the house.
The base is the job
A paver installation is excavation to the right depth, a compacted aggregate base built up in lifts, a screeded bedding layer, then the pavers, then edge restraint and joint sand. Skimp on base depth or compaction and you get ruts, dips and rocking pavers — usually first in the wheel tracks of a driveway.
Edge restraint is the other failure point. Without it the perimeter creeps outward under load, joints open up, and the field of pavers gradually loses its lock.
Drainage and Florida sun
Slope and drainage get designed in from the start. Water has to move away from the house, not pond against the foundation or in the middle of a patio, and Tampa Bay storms deliver a lot of it in a short window.
Sun matters too. Colour holds up differently under this much UV, and surface temperature is a real consideration for anywhere people walk barefoot. We will talk through both when you choose.
Common questions
How long does a paver driveway last?
Longevity comes down to the base far more than the paver. A properly excavated, compacted and restrained installation stays flat for a long time and individual units can be lifted and reset if needed. A thin or poorly compacted base will show ruts and settling regardless of how good the pavers are.
Can you install pavers over an existing concrete driveway?
Sometimes, depending on the condition of the slab, drainage, and how the resulting height change affects the garage threshold and surrounding grade. It needs assessing on site.
Do pavers need sealing?
Sealing is optional. It deepens colour and can make cleaning easier, but it is a maintenance commitment rather than a one-off, since sealed surfaces need resealing periodically. We will explain the trade-off rather than push it.
Will weeds grow through the joints?
Correctly installed joint sand limits it considerably. Anything that does appear generally germinates in debris that settles on the surface over time rather than growing up through the base, so it stays a maintenance item rather than a structural one.
